Scarring
-Scar tissue is sticky and will stick to muscle tissue, bone, fascia around it
-It is worse with radiation
-Affects entire body not just your chest
-Fascial system is like the Saran wrap of our body
Why Do We Care About Scarring?
-Can cause increased pain, nerve symptoms, impingement of the shoulder, hypersensitivity of the skin and tissue around the surgical site, increased risk of pneumonia, back pain, pelvic dysfunction leading to hip and knee issues
-Scarring affects the fascial system and can cause shoulder, chest, back, pelvic issues down the road following breast surgery and radiation
-We can improved scar tissue. Do not be discouraged! Scar tissue can improve even years down the road
-Scar Tissue Mobilization
o PT will address scar tissue as well as shoulder mechanics, spine, postureā¦
o Desensitize your scars and the front of your chest (after breast surgery your chest can get very sensitive)
o Will not change the shape of your reconstruction
o Can feel odd at first because of numbness following surgery and/or radiation treatment
o Self-Mobilization at home
